Answered Slow message ? Perhaps Comrade Chatting While You Lie

Answered Slow message ? Perhaps Comrade Chatting While You Lie

You never chatted via digital messages such as SMS , social media , or instant messaging like Yahoo! Messenger ?

Sometimes , your opponent very long chat to answer your message . So far , that arise in our minds when we are very old message gets a response , it is likely opponents chat we 're losing the signal , running out of credit , or an activity interrupted .

However , a study by a team from Brigham Young University ( BYU ) in Utah , United States found that when we chat opponent so long to respond , it is possible he is preparing the answers lie .

" Digital conversation is fertile ground for lying , because people can easily hide the identity . Their messages too often seem to be believed , " said Tom Meservy , professor of information systems at BYU .

" Unfortunately , humans are not good at detecting lies . Nah , we create a method for it , " he added .

According Meservy , very difficult to tell if someone is lying through digital message , because we could not hear the voice or see the expression .

With so many cases involving financial loss and security threats to a person due to digital lie , Meservy and fellow BYU professor Jeffrey Jenkins , in collaboration with researchers from the University of Nebraska - Omaha and the University of Arizona , compiling an experimental instrument .

The goal , track digital clues lie . The researchers created a computer program that can do online conversations with respondents , similar to a conversation between a customer service with customer service representative .

More than 100 students from two large universities prompted a conversation with the computer , which asks 30 questions to each student .

Then , students were asked to lie in answering at least half the questions .

As a result, the research team found that each answer is a lie it took 10 percent longer ( than the honest answer ) , and edited much longer .

" We began to identify the signs shown by people who lie . Thing that is not easily done by humans , " said Meservy .
A chat -based system , he added , could be made to detect lies in real -time .

The findings are published in the academic journal ACM Transactions on Management Information Systems , this week .

Meservy and Jenkins , who wrote the study report explains , that we should not automatically assume that someone is lying when they respond much longer . However , this study provides an overview or general pattern that usually occurs .

" This is just the beginning . We need to collect more data , " he said . ( * )
