Unlock Mobile Considered Illegal, the Obama Administration's Actions
United States: As of January 2013, unlocked phones is considered as an illegal activity. That's why every mobile communication device is required to run on the network of one operator alone, can not be used on other carriers.
Mobile unlock is now considered illegal, because exception rules contained in the rules of intellectual property in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) has expired by January 2013 then.
Protests also came from some circles. They then made a petition to the government to do something. The petition was created as a declaration of support for the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules that wants no 'lock' on the customer's mobile phone.
Last month, the FCC promised to work harder so that the communication device is no longer locked by the operator. But apparently, according to Android Authority website reported on Thursday (19/09/2013), the petition and the FCC ruling also received support from the Obama administration and some members of Congress.
Even The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) is said to have set up the rules and the process of setting to unlock mobile phones and tablets. Communications agency that the Obama administration was set up tablets and phones must be unlocked according to customer demand.
"Americans must be allowed to use their mobile devices in the network where they choose and have an unlocked device," said Lawrence Strickling, Assistant Secretary of NTIA.
