Head of Brand & Corporate Marketing Communication Smartfren Roberto Saputra said modem industry a "sunset industry" which over time will sink and not have sustainability.
"We are still producing modems, we even control more than half the market share. Yet we have estimated the modem era will not be long before so we started to focus on developing smart phones," said Roberto Saputra in Jakarta, Friday
Roberto said the behavior of today's society has changed, from the use of computers and laptops that require a modem for Internet access to use of handheld devices such as tablets and smart phones that already have internet connection.
Therefore, the use of the modem will be abandoned. Moreover, smart phones today have the "Wi-Fi tethering" which can be used as a "portable Wi-Fi hotspot" to multiple devices at once, including computers and laptops.
"Some computer manufacturers and the global laptop also has predicted that they shared modem era certainly will be shifted to the handheld device. We will constantly monitor and keep track of," he said.
