More Popular Than a Tablet PC in the Middle East

DUBAI - Shipping tablet to the Middle East and Africa exceeded sending a personal computer (PC) for the first time in the second quarter of 2013, according to a report released on Thursday (19/8) by an American market research company.

International Data Corporation (IDC), which specializes in information technology and telecommunications industry, said tablet shipments for the period in Mena rose to 208 per cent year-on-year, to reach 2.79 million units.

Because tablets like Apple Ipad, Lenovo X61 and Samsung Galaxy Tab increasingly well known in the region, "increased demand has attracted several multinational PC sellers to shift a greater portion of all their sales center on the tablet," the report said.

Android operating system is a major contributor to this growth, IDC said, as reported by Xinhua - which is monitored in Jakarta, Friday (30/8). No less than two million Android-based devices shipped into the region in the second quarter of 2013.

"The launch of the iPad mini can not prevent iOS to quickly lose a part of Android devices, while the cost to be the key factor why consumers settled on a tablet," said Victoria Mendes, reviewers IDC research on PCs and IT infrastructure in the Middle East, Africa and Turkey.

"However, the launch of new Apple products - are expected to be present in the market before the end of this year - is expected to drive growth for the traders in the region," said the woman reviewers.
